From lehd-ltd@lists.census.gov Fri Oct 31 17:42:30 2008 From: lehd-ltd@lists.census.gov (Graham, Todd) Date: Fri, 31 Oct 2008 11:42:30 -0500 Subject: [lehd-ltd] New release of Census/LED, thru 2006, at www.vrdc.cornell.edu/onthemap/data/v3/ In-Reply-To: Message-ID: --_000_C803D69C9CCBC74D8A3625CC9D78D809753D746598EXCHMB1mcloca_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Hi all, Census Bureau/LED has published new datasets; they went online yesterday. = Years 2002, 03, 04 are revised and replaced. Years 2005 and 06 are *new*. Cornell Univ serves as the online data warehouse for the project. * Use as a start page http://vrdc.ciser.cornell.edu/onthemap/doc/ * Get downloads at http://www.vrdc.cornell.edu/onthemap/data/v3/ * This second link, for the downloads, requires a username and password.= It's easy to request if you don't already have one. Additional documentation and a link to download files are all there. Some things to Know: * The files are CSV flat files. Files are quite large. OD files have mi= llions of records. To use them, you'll need a serious database program. (E= xcel won't cut it.) * Files organization and naming conventions have changed. For each year= , Census/LED and Cornell are providing 16 different filter/queried tabulati= ons for residence area stats and 16 more for workplace area stats (the inte= nt is to allow you more cross-tab detail)... * So read Lars Vilhuber's 2-page memo ( www.vrdc.cornell.edu/onthemap/da= ta/v3/notes-otm-v3.0.pdf ) explaining the new regime and file-naming logic. * You should replace your old 2002-04 files; we've been advised by Matth= ew Graham that they continue to make "work-in-progress" refinements in proc= essing, geocoding, "fuzzing" - and they apply these refinements to the past= years' datasets. In other words, home and work locations could be slightl= y different, number of records in the tables could be different. Hope that helps. PS - Disclaimer - I'm just a regional agency demographer - I'm not with the= Bureau. Hi all,

Census Bureau/LED has pu= blished new datasets; they went online yesterday.  Years 2002, 03, 04 are revi= sed and replaced.  Years 2005 and 06 are *new*.

Cornell Univ serves as the online data warehouse for the project.

Additional documentation and a link to download files ar= e all there.

Some things to Know:

  • The files a= re CSV flat files. Files are quite large.  OD files have millions of records.  To use them, you’ll need a serious database progr= am. (Excel won’t cut it.)
  • Files organ= ization and naming conventions have changed.  For each year, Census/LED a= nd Cornell are providing 16 different filter/queried tabulations for residence area stats and 16 more for workplace area stats (the intent = is to allow you more cross-tab detail)…
  • So read Lar= s Vilhuber’s 2-page memo ( www.vrdc.cornell.edu/onthemap/data/v3/notes-otm-v3.0.pdf )  explaining the new regime and file-naming logic.
  • You should = replace your old 2002-04 files; we’ve been advised by Matthew Graham tha= t they continue to make “work-in-progress” refinements in processing, geocoding, “fuzzing” – and they apply th= ese refinements to the past years’ datasets.  In other words, h= ome and work locations could be slightly different, number of records in t= he tables could be different.

Hope that helps.

PS – Disclaim= er – I’m just a regional agency demographer – I’m not = with the Bureau.
